  2. Could a Blind Person Drive a Car? -

These days, technology can do virtually anything, including putting blind people behind the wheel.

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and an engineering team at Virginia Tech have been working since 2007 to produce a vehicle that will allow blind people to drive.

The prototype for the first self-driving vehicle is a Ford Escape with a non-visual interface to help sightless drivers maneuver on the road. Vibrating gloves tell the driver where and when to turn and laser sensors to act as the driver's "eyes."

The NFB hopes that self-driving vehicles will provide blind people with greater independence and change the way people perceive the blind.

Blind drivers will test-drive the modified Escape at Daytona International Speedway in January.

No word yet on how much auto insurance will cost for blind drivers.

  3. State-by-State Breakdown of Texting While Driving Laws -

Not sure if texting while driving is legal in your state?

This infographic from NPR offers a detailed look at each state's current or proposed law for texting while driving.

Check it out at States Accelerate Effort To Ban Texting While Driving.

Pay particular attention to Utah, where offenders could face up to 90 days in jail and a $750 fine. That's a hefty price tag that could get even higher if a point is added to your driving record and your auto insurance premium rises.

  4. 4th of July is the Deadliest Driving Day of the Year -

Here's a 4th of July shocker: Fireworks, alcohol and automobiles don't mix. In fact, a combination of the three leads to nearly 500 fatalities annually, making Independence Day the deadliest driving day of the year.

The key factor is alcohol. Over half of fatal accidents occurring on the 4th of July are alcohol-related.

Unfortunately, the danger doesn't end after the Fourth. Since the 4th of July falls on a Sunday, most Americans will have Monday off, making for a potentially explosive 3-day weekend. On Friday and Saturday, the roads will be packed with motorists heading out of town for the long weekend; on Monday, the roads will overflow again, this time with thousands of half-conscious drivers fighting nasty hangovers. In 2008, 491 people died in auto accidents during the three-day 4th of July weekend.

The best way to escape the 4th of July weekend unscathed is to avoid driving altogether. Take regional transit or celebrate at home. If you're visiting friends or relatives, make plans to spend the night. If you do plan to drive, avoid driving after 10 p.m. and get a designated driver if you plan to drink alcohol.

If your auto insurance company learns you've been busted for a DUI, your rates will skyrocket and your policy may be terminated.
